Project 4: Do or Make

3. Do or Make: Geocaching in Education

To begin tracking your own geocache, start by ordering a container and a trackable item from the Geocaching Shop online. For this project, I ordered an Official Geocache Container and a green trackable Geocaching QR Travel Bug (shown below).

When Geocache item arrives log on to www.geocaching.com/track to enter the activation code and tracking number. The online form requires you to set a goal for the travel bug, such as where you would like to see it travel. Below is an example of the required information:

Once you complete the registration, you will receive a message advising the activation of your item is complete.

Next step is to assign the item to a location, then monitor the Geocache items activity on the same website where you registered it.

Creating your own location begins with three basic steps ...

1. Take the Quiz
Before you are permitted to hide your item, you must read the Geocache Listing Requirements and Guidelines and Take This Quiz.

There were eight questions. I made 100!

2. Find a Great Spot and Prepare Your Geocache
Your geocache can bring adventurers to state parks, historical monuments, or even locations that are unknown to many.

3. Submit Your Geocache for Review
Each geocache listing is reviewed by Community Volunteer Reviewers.

Currently there are over 300 Community Volunteer Reviewers around the world.
Create a New Geocache

You must register your items location. Start by inputting your generalized location, such as  zip code or city, state. From there you are directed to a map showing all of the Geocaches near you to prevent you from placing your item too close to other geocache items.

The image provides a courteous reminder of the rules.

Next, obtain permission from the land manager to obtain permission to place my geocache at their location.

St. James Catholic Church in McDonough will be my location and I am experiencing difficulty reaching the land manager for this project. I plan to continue in efforts until I reach success and update this blog upon completion of the mission.
